Dear all, may I introduce my new Photoshop Wiki: http://opticalenquiry.com/photoshop/ I wrote it to support my digital painting course here in Singapore's School of Art Design and Media. It covers such elements of Photoshop as are useful to the digital painter. It also dips its toe into some key picture-making skills such as composition and perspective. It is very much a work in progress. Feedback welcome.
  • Bullet for maya 2012 issues

Hi I am currently trying out the Bullet plugin for maya 2012 Apologies for the noobiness of this post but there are some fundamental points about the solver that are not very clear from the docs firstly it would seem that bullet is more stable when working with the scene scale set to cm. When we set gravity to -980 cm ;it would seem that objects never hit this terminal velocity. They keep accelerating. Are we missing something? acceleration pattern of a ball with default mass of 1 1 sec 24 frames = 4.52 units 2 sec 24 frames = 14.312 units 3 sec 24 frames = 24.112 units 4 sec 24 frames =…
  • corner pin

    27 Jan 2012 | 6:16 am
I am tracking a small image on a pretty big resolution footage, I'd like to apply a corner pin on the image I'm tracking to change its perspective, so if I apply it I can do this but the 4 points of the corner pin are at the corners of the background footage, which is too far from the card I'm tracking, is there any way in nuke to have the 4 points of the corner pin just around the area of the object you are corner pinning? hope my question is clear, thanks!

  • This Idea Is Not Working by Henrique Barone

    Brandon Lori
    27 Jan 2012 | 7:59 am
After we were initially sent Henrique Barone’s stellar short, This Idea Is Not Working, our jaws hit floor. We immediately wanted to share it with our  Motionographer readers, so got the engine warmed up and put things in motion. Then, something happened: we found out it’s a student piece. Jeepers! We scratched our head and weighed the options. Of course, we do have our Students section and although you can find it there, we were so impressed by Barone’s animation skills that we had no choice but to give it some love in our Main section. One thing we never want…

  • Bill Maher’s ‘Irritable Bowl Syndrome’ by Fraser Davidson

    Brandon Lori
    26 Jan 2012 | 1:22 pm
Earlier this week, we posted Fraser Davidson’s slick, type-driven animation, Irritable Bowl Syndrome: an infographic piece inspired by a cutting excerpt taken from Bill Maher’s book, “The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody but Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass.” With the Superbowl only 10 days away, once again, sports fans and advertisers become unlikely bedfellows. In the spirit of this great, hard-hitting American tradition, we’ve upgraded the piece to our main section and chatted up the artist for a little Q&A. Enjoy the foxy animation and witty…

Acting and Animation There has been debate and discussion lately regarding if motion capture is pure acting. • Dream Quest

    15 Nov 2011 | 5:08 pm
Below are a few videos with visual effects by Dream Quest, a visual effects company I co-founded in late 1979.  These are from the first 5 years. The company was later sold to Disney and changed it's name to the Secret Lab, which Disney then closed. All effects were done using 35mm film and opticals since digital effects were yet to be possible. Great examples of cheesy car spots from the 80's.

I urge you to spend some time to get informed before the opportunity passes you by. There are a number of problems with the visual effects industry currently. Unions and Trade Organizations

As it's a new year, I thought I'm mention a bunch of cool new things that I'm doing.  I'm currently working on another commercial, this time for the Super Bowl, but it's not with the commercial team this time, it's a trailer for an upcoming movie! I can't mention anything more than that, of course, but be sure and watch the Super Bowl for the commercials.  Why else?  I don't even know when the game is supposed to be played, but I think it is in a couple of weeks. My skeleton cube is still going strong, this is the year I finish it! Full nominee list is here.On a side note, happy new year! It's been quite a while since I last posted anything of merit here.  Last year was the year of commercials for me, as I worked almost nonstop for the last half of the year on a plethora of Digital Domain commercials. I had a great time, and the teams were phenomenal. I had a chance to work with all…
  • Divorce Rate in VFX?

    28 Oct 2011 | 12:53 pm
After working long hours the last couple of weeks on a commercial, a question came up about the rate of divorce in this industry.  I've been hitting about 60-65 hours in a five day space, roughly 12 hours a day. This isn't the norm for me, but for some people in the industry, it's just the beginning, which I can't seem to fathom. So I'm taking an informal poll, out of the sample of readers here. Feel free to direct more people to the poll, just to see where it takes us. I'm trying out this polling service, so also let me know if it's any good for you, or if there's a different one you…

But as the Real Steelcharacters had no real translucency, the process was easier, although artists still did a multi-pass approach as a multi-channel OpenEXR.Compositing has certain key tasks,…
