Given that many adults these days don’t know the difference between you’re and your, this ad from Reading is Fundamental is pretty dammed relevant. It’s also kind of cute and cool. Yep. Mother NYC has gone above and beyond here and there’s little doubt that the promo ‘Book People Unite’ has some big bucks behind it (Although, notably, RIF is a non-profit agency). Directed by the award-winning Rafael Fernandez of Green Dot Films, the promo mixes puppetry, animation and real life shooting, with characters like Little Red Riding Hood cruising in a soft top car with the Big Bad Wolf,…

The amount of overtime, it’s difficulty on workers physically and the need to keep finding work to help pay

  • Question regarding workflow

So, my dilemma.. I have matchmoved some handheld footage of a free move with a decent amount of shake involved. The track is perfect. I presented the results to my professor inside Maya with some basic geometry to show the matchmove was solid. They insisted on me minimizing camera shake/jitter. They told me to stabilize the footage before matchmoving. I have tried "remove jitter" in nuke with a tracker but the results make the plate seem like its warping a bit in certain areas to compensate. Now question is, I bring this into a matchmoving software like PFTrack to re-solve. Won't…

Some months ago we announced the teaser, and now “Colosse - A Wood Tale”, the sweet new short directed by Hornet’s Yves Geleyn, is out. This beautifully handcrafted little story of a wood robot puppet and his bird friend talks about eccentricity, companionship and acceptance.Yves Geleyn, from Hornet’s site:“I’m a huge fan of Jim Henson’s work. I have always wanted to work with puppets but never had the chance to do so before. I’m also a huge fan of robots; they were in all my childhood movies, cartoons, and comics. This is a story from Georges Méliès, early film director and visual effects artist. The film HUGO covered part of his life and the VES (Visual Effects Society) uses his image of a Rocket in the face of the moon as it's icon. Big cinema producer said to Melies one day "Your mistake is to see everything from an artist point of view. That's why you'll always just be an artist and not a businessman

Well, I don't even know where to start on this.. It's been quite a while since my last posting, and all sorts of stuff have been happening. I was on a little indie project called The Avengers, which came out last weekend and made $207 million.  I had high hopes with Whedon directing, and I was no disappointed. Not too shabby. We'll see what it will do this weekend against some new weekend competition. Some other big news was that IATSE was actually starting to follow through with organizing VFX. Head to VFXsoldier's site to read more, and there's always the Twitter option. I'm on…
  • The job

Do you know what I love most about this job? This visual effects one, where I work 45+ hours a week?  It because the outcome is cool shit like this. And this. Sure, story is non existent, and it might bomb at the box office because of it, but HOLY cow. It's effects like these that just really make me love my job.. Who cares where the creatures comes from or that the storyline might suck.  It just looks COOL. So all you artists that feel jaded and under appreciated, I still respect the work you do. I mean, look at it. Who didn't appreciate Optimus Prime wrecking havoc in Chicago? Or…
  • VFX in Vancouver

    13 Feb 2012 | 3:30 pm
As many of you are aware, Vancouver is having a wonderful boom for VFX jobs.  This benefit is three-fold.  Companies get cheaper labor (theoretically), artists get cooler films to work on, and students get a foot in the door. However, the reality is anything but.I love Vancouver. I lived up there for six years, and I felt at home. Great weather (aside from the rain), easy access to outdoor amenities, and it was just a really great place for an international city that is still in North America, and easily accessible by Californian VFX artists. Making a decision to move up north is…
